Mr. Subodh Pattanaik,

Born on 1st February 1964, at Chhatrapur (Ganjam), is the Founder Director of Natya Chetana, who conceived the idea of ‘Theatre for Awareness’ in 1986. He is a Graduate in Drama from Utkal University of Orissa. He devotes fulltime to theatre and Natya Chetana to develop Modern Indian Theatre style with a social commitment.

He has established two such models of modern Indian theatre form known as – Cyco Theatre and Intimate Theatre. He is a well-known playwright and theatre director in the province of Odisha as well as in India, who has written and directed about 27 long and 47 short plays mainly produced through Natya Chetana. He has been awarded for his life time contribution in the province recognised by Govt of Odisha by giving Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 2020.

He has received important short-term trainings and exposures from India and abroad. Badal Sircar (The Father of Third theatre) is the eye-opener of Subodh’s vision in 1991.

He has been invited regularly since 1993 to international events abroad and delivered speeches, conducted workshops visiting countries like – Australia, Hong Kong, France, The Netherlands, Finland, Nepal, Srilanka, Norway, Canada, Belgium, Korea, Bangladesh, UK and USA etc..

In 2004, He has directed multinational productions like – “The Blue Gold?” having artists from 4 continents. In 2007, an intercultural production “Crossing III” played by French and Indian artists in World Congress of Drama and Education. In 2009, he also has directed Indo-Bangladesh theatre productions among Indian and Bangladesh artists. He has been invited by Korean Theatre Director’s Association(KTDA) to direct a play of Moliere for sharing his style of theatre in an Asian Theatre Festival at Seoul and Mindulle of Korea ot create a play in Cyco Theatre model named “The Mountain Cries”. Got involved in a multi continental project called “The Spice Road” by Theatre for Everyone (France).

Theatre workers and Social workers from different countries have been attending his guidance and sessions through their study placement in Natya Gram, Natya Chetana since 1992. Researchers from abroad and insidce have done a quite a number of study and 2 persons have got PhD degree about his work mainly. 

“Natya Gram”, a Theatre Village is progressing in building a campus for a commune living and work for theatre, under his supervision and ideas.
